On February 17th, 2009, President Obama signed into law the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA). This act is an unprecedented effort to jumpstart our economy, create or save millions of jobs, and put a down payment on addressing challenges in the public sector so our country can thrive in the 21st century. The Act is an extraordinary response to a crisis, unlike any since the Great Depression, and includes measures to modernize our nation's infrastructure, enhance energy independence, preserve and improve affordable health care, provide tax relief, and expand and enhance educational opportunity.
(ARRA) creates an unprecedented opportunity for educators to implement innovative strategies in Title I schools that improve education for at-risk students and close the achievement gaps. For the 2009-2010 school year, the regular Title I funding set aside each year by Congress is 14.5 billion dollars. This year, there is an additional $10 billion in ARRA funds for Title I, Part A grants to local educational agencies in order to help improve teaching and learning for students most at risk of failing to meet state academic achievement standards. Below is a detailed description of Side By Side's use of ARRA funds.
